Smash alternative: what the queue means

Two contradicting claims about Smash go around: "free, with no size limit" and "2 GB and that's it". Both are wrong, and the truth is on their own pricing page, where both halves of the same policy appear.

The accurate version, checked on 27 September 2026, is this: the free Smash plan lists 2 GB per transfer, and larger transfers are accepted but go into a queue behind Pro transfers. Their footnote says "Beyond 2 GB, transfers join a queue behind Pro transfers", and their FAQ adds that such transfers are "uploaded to our servers and sent after a waiting period".

That is not a hard limit, and it is not unlimited sending either. It is a queue.

What Smash does better than us

It does not reject your large file on the free plan. With us, a hosted transfer above the free plan's allowance simply does not go through. With them it does; it just waits. For someone who sends rarely and is in no hurry, that is objectively better.

Files stay up to 7 days, for free, against 1–3 days with us. If your recipient opens the email whenever they get round to it, that difference matters.

No sign-up on the free plan. Their pricing page says the free plan needs no payment and no sign-up. With us, the sender confirms an email address with a one-time code.

Large paid plans. Pro lists unlimited transfer size with 1 TB of storage and files kept up to 30 days, and Team, for 10 to 50 users, lists 2 TB of storage.

What the queue means in practice

The queue is not a fee you pay once. It is a variable you do not control: you do not know in advance how long you will wait, because it depends on how many paying subscribers are uploading at the same time. For a file going to a client on Monday evening who expects it on Tuesday morning, "sent after a waiting period" is an unknown you have to plan around.

Our answer to the same problem works differently. The peer-to-peer transfer waits behind nobody, because it does not use our server at all: the bytes travel straight between the two browsers, at the speed of your connection. Peer-to-peer is free up to 5 GB on the free plan, then a one-off payment per transfer unlocks any size. The trade-off is a condition, not a wait: your tab stays open until the end, and the recipient has to be online at that moment. If that condition does not suit you, switch to a hosted transfer, which has a clear size limit on every plan.

How the prices are published

Smash has a free plan and two paid plans, Pro and Team, with Team for 10 to 50 users, plus Enterprise on a custom quote. On 27 September 2026 their pricing page offered monthly, yearly and two-year billing. Read today's amount on fromsmash.com/pricing. We do not print it and we do not convert it.

We publish the monthly price and the yearly total separately, together with the yearly discount. Turning a two-year amount into a monthly price would hide exactly the part that matters: how long you commit for. Compare them over your own time frame, not ours. The current amounts for every plan are on the pricing page, read straight from the catalogue used at checkout.

How to choose between them

Pick Smash if you send rarely, for free, a file larger than our free plan accepts, and waiting does not bother you. That is what their free plan is built for, and we recommend it for that without reservation.

Pick Transferify if the transfer has to go out now, or if you want a password, an expiry you choose, a download limit and download confirmation. For a really large file and a recipient who is online at that moment, the peer-to-peer mode removes the question "how much longer is it in the queue" altogether. The full process is on the page about how to send large files.

Sources and review date

We read every Smash figure above on their pricing page on 27 September 2026. It holds the 2 GB figure, the queue footnote, the file availability per plan, the plans and the billing options:

  • The free plan, the queue beyond 2 GB, the file availability, Pro, Team and the amounts we do not print here: fromsmash.com/pricing

The Transferify figures come from the plan catalogue the product enforces, published on the pricing page. If you see something different on the Smash site today, their site is right, and we want to know so we can correct it here.

Frequently asked questions

Does the free Smash plan really have no size limit?

Not quite, but it does not reject large files either. Their pricing page lists 2 GB per transfer, with a footnote that beyond 2 GB transfers join a queue behind Pro transfers. Larger transfers are accepted, but they are sent after those of paying subscribers. Checked on 27 September 2026.

How long do files stay online with Smash?

Up to 7 days on the free plan and up to 30 days on Pro. Their comparison table lists up to 30 days on every paid plan too, so nothing goes past 30 days on any plan. Checked on 27 September 2026.

How much does Smash Pro cost?

Smash has a free plan and the paid plans Pro and Team, plus Enterprise on a custom quote. On 27 September 2026 their pricing page offered monthly, yearly and two-year billing. We do not print the amount here, because it can change without us knowing. Read it on fromsmash.com/pricing and check which billing period it applies to.

What does Smash do better than Transferify?

It does not reject a large file on the free plan, it accepts it and queues it, and it keeps files for up to 7 days, against 1–3 days with us. If you are in no hurry at all, that is hard to beat for free.

What do I gain by choosing Transferify over Smash?

The transfer does not wait behind anyone in a queue, and the peer-to-peer mode runs at the speed of your connection: peer-to-peer is free up to 5 GB on the free plan, then a one-off payment per transfer unlocks any size, with no limit on a paid plan. On the hosted link you also get a password, an expiry you choose, a download limit and download confirmation.

What are the limits of the free Transferify plan?

An allowance per hosted transfer, an expiry of 1–3 days, 10 recipients per transfer and 50 downloads per calendar month. The number of transfers is not capped, but the active storage of free accounts counts. Peer-to-peer transfers are free up to 5 GB, then a one-off payment per transfer.
