WeTransfer alternative: free plans compared

If the free WeTransfer plan stopped you mid-delivery, compare its limits with the Transferify free plan below before you send your files.

Send files for free now. The recipient downloads in the browser, with no account and nothing to install.

WeTransfer tightened its free plan in December 2024. Since then what counts is not only how big the file you are sending is, but how much you have sent in the last 30 days. Below is what you get from Transferify, and where WeTransfer is still the better choice.

What "free" means at WeTransfer today

On the free plan, WeTransfer allows 10 transfers or 3 GB in total, in a rolling 30-day window. Whichever limit you reach first applies, so three one-gigabyte files use up your budget as fast as ten small ones. What you upload stays available for up to 3 days, on the free plan and on Starter alike.

We re-read the WeTransfer limits and availability periods in their official help center on 27 September 2026, and the links are at the end of this page. We do not quote the price of the Starter plan here. Read it on the WeTransfer pricing page, also linked at the end.

There is one difference worth remembering. At WeTransfer the cap is the budget for the month. At Transferify it is a single transfer. For other free limits, see also how we compare with SwissTransfer, Filemail and TransferXL.

What WeTransfer does better

We also say what WeTransfer does better than us, and there are two things:

  • The name. Nobody needs a WeTransfer link explained, and a client who receives one opens it without a second thought. Any less familiar name pays a trust cost on the first delivery, and that cost is real.
  • Long-term storage. Their Ultimate plan keeps a transfer of up to 1 TB "for as long as you'd like". On Premium you can choose never as well, but the transfer takes space from your 1 TB of active storage for as long as it exists, so every delivery you keep forever shrinks the room for the next one.

If your active archive is larger than 1 TB and has to be kept for years, we are not the right choice. For everything else, read on.

What you get from Transferify

Transferify has two ways to send, and the difference between them explains why a "cap" means something else here than at WeTransfer.

The hosted link works the way theirs does: the files upload, you get a link, and you close the tab. On the free plan the allowance applies per transfer, not as a monthly budget, and the number of transfers is not capped. What limits you is the active storage of your account, and that frees up as soon as you delete a transfer.

The peer-to-peer transfer is free up to 5 GB on the free plan, then a one-off payment per transfer unlocks any size; on a paid plan it has no size limit, because the files never land on our servers. They travel straight between the two browsers, end-to-end encrypted. The trade-off is that your tab stays open until the recipient has finished downloading. For a 40 GB edit going to a colleague who is online right now, it is exactly the right mode. The peer-to-peer page explains how it works, and the features page compares the two modes in full.

Hosted files are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before upload and stay encrypted in storage. If you want us to be unable to read the content too, the zero-knowledge mode on the Premium plan keeps the key with you alone. The trade-off is that nobody can recover a lost link, us included.

The Transferify plans

  • Basic: 50 GB per transfer, 100 GB of storage, expiry of 1–7 days, 100 downloads a month, 20 recipients.
  • Plus: 100 GB per transfer, 250 GB of storage, expiry of 1–30 days, 300 downloads a month, 50 recipients.
  • Premium: 1 TB per transfer, 1 TB of storage, expiry of 1–30 days or never, recovery for 30 days, 1,000 downloads a month, 200 recipients.

The current monthly and yearly prices are on the pricing page, which reads them straight from the catalogue used at checkout.

What we do not promise

We asked WeTransfer for figures you can check, so here are ours, stated up front rather than in a footnote:

  • The free plan includes 50 downloads per calendar month, added up across all your transfers. The paid plans raise that cap, but they do not remove it.
  • On the free plan you choose an expiry of 1–3 days; WeTransfer keeps free uploads for up to 3 days.
  • The peer-to-peer transfer is free up to 5 GB on the free plan and above that only for a one-off payment per transfer, but it needs your tab to stay open until the download finishes.
  • We do not promise unlimited transfers, storage or downloads on any plan. Every plan has figures, and the figures are public.

Moving a workflow over from WeTransfer

  1. Open Transferify and drop your files onto the page. Neither you nor the recipient installs anything.
  2. Confirm your email address with a one-time code. There is no password to choose.
  3. Pick the hosted link if you want to close the tab, or peer-to-peer if the recipient is online right now.
  4. Set how long the link lasts and send it. The recipient opens it in any browser, with no account.

The detailed steps, and what happens in each mode, are on the page about how to send large files.

Sources and review date

We checked the limits and file availability on these official pages on 27 September 2026:

Read the price of the Starter plan on the WeTransfer pricing page. We do not quote an amount here and we do not publish an estimated price.

The date the free plan was tightened is not on their help pages, so we take it from a third-party source, cited only to back it up: the December 2024 announcement as reported by TechCrunch.

The Transferify figures come from the plan catalogue the product enforces. If you find a difference between what this page says and what the app does, the app is right and this page gets corrected.

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits of the free WeTransfer plan?

On the free plan, WeTransfer allows 10 transfers or 3 GB in total in a rolling 30-day window, and uploads stay available for up to 3 days. Whichever limit you reach first applies. Figures from the WeTransfer help center, checked on 27 September 2026.

Is WeTransfer still free?

Yes, but the free plan is now a 30-day budget rather than a limit per file, 10 transfers or 3 GB in total, whichever comes first. Once you reach it, you wait for the rolling window to clear.

How much can I send for free with Transferify?

On hosted links the allowance applies to each transfer, and the number of transfers is not capped. What limits you is the active storage of your account, which frees up as soon as you delete a transfer. Peer-to-peer transfers are free up to 5 GB, then a one-off payment per transfer unlocks any size; paid plans have no size limit. The free plan includes 50 downloads per calendar month.

Does the recipient need an account to download?

No. Whoever gets the link opens it in a browser and downloads, with no account and nothing to install. Only the sender confirms an email address, with a one-time code.

Can I choose how long the link stays active?

Yes, within your plan. 1–3 days on the free plan, 1–7 days on Basic, 1–30 days on Plus and 1–30 days on Premium. On Premium you can also choose never, and the link stays active until you delete it, within your active storage. A peer-to-peer transfer lasts as long as you keep the tab open.

What does WeTransfer do better than Transferify?

Recipients recognise the name straight away. And the WeTransfer Ultimate plan keeps a transfer of up to 1 TB for as long as you like. On Premium you can also choose never, but everything you keep has to fit in 1 TB of active storage.
